Takeaway For Collection & Delivery in Rathmines, Dublin 6

Rathmines, a suburb to the south of Dublin is nestled in the Leinster Province of Ireland. With history going back to the 14th century, Rathmines has a rich history. In 1649 a battle took place during Oliver Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland which lead to the death of 5,000 people. The Grand Canal connected Rathmines with Portobello through the La Touch Bridge (or Portobello Bridge). The Grand Canal spans along Rathmines Road to Rathgar in the south, Ranelagh to the east and Harold’s Cross to the west.

A point of interest include the Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners with its noticeable copper dome. This impressive dome is the second dome after the original was destroyed in a fire in the early 20th century. The famous dome was built in Glasgow and was made for a Russian orthodox church before the 1917 Revolution. During the five months of intense renovation many improvements took place; such as a new altar, a marble pulpit and many of the side altars. Today, the Church of Mary Immaculate enjoys a thriving Parish.

Another beautiful church, the Holy Trinity Church is in the Gothic Revival style which includes decorative patterns, finials, scalloping, lancet windows and label stops. The architect John Semple, also worked on St. Marys Chapel of Ease in Broadstone and Monkstown Church of Ireland.

Rathmine Library, built in the Baroque style in 1913, opened in the early part of the 20th century with a generous grant from Andrew Carnegie, who created many large and well-kept libraries. A notable feature of this stunning building are the beautiful stained glass windows depicting an allegory of literature.
